A Greek Hideaway That Feels Like Home: Amber House

Travel isn’t just about distance. It’s about finding places that change how you experience the world, where a curtain swaying in the breeze or birdsong drifting through a garden becomes a memory you return to. Aegina, a small island just an hour from Athens, drew us in long before our arrival, with its pistachio groves, quiet harbours, and villages that seem untouched by time. But it was Amber House that made the journey essential.

The main house, designed by Giorgios Makris, balances architectural confidence with warmth. Each corner is considered, decorated with care and taste. The space feels expansive yet inviting, with every colour, fabric, and beam of light carefully chosen. Since its opening, Amber House has drawn attention online, but it has maintained an understated, almost underground sensibility. It does not seek to impress; it simply exists, offering its character to those who notice.

Mornings and Moments Inside

Amber House manages to feel both generous and intimate. Large windows, a terrace with a view, and interiors that feel personal without excess. Just outside Aegina’s centre, it rests in a calm, quiet neighbourhood, offering a gentle contrast to the island’s busier corners. The main room on the ground floor is expansive, with windows on every side, so sunlight and shifting shadows play across the space throughout the day. Certain design touches, oddly, hinted at the colonial era—but Amber House defies categorisation. It simply is what it is: singular, with a subtle je ne sais quoi.

While the house is undeniably striking, it is also deeply practical. A washing machine, a fully equipped kitchen with a large fridge, a coffee machine (Nespresso pods), and elegant cutlery and dinnerware ensure everything is at hand. Inside, a table for four is available, though we recommend dining outside, turning meals into a leisurely apero-dinatoire under the sky.

The kitchen, framed by generous windows, is more than functional; it makes you want to cook. Deep green wooden cabinets, subtle finishes, and the surrounding greenery make it a space you naturally enjoy spending time in. Mornings are especially unique: sunlight streams in, catching highlights even on the steam rising from a simple hard-boiled egg, transforming a routine moment into something quietly beautiful.

A curved staircase leads to the loft studio, the true crown of the house. Filled with books, art materials, and carefully curated objects, it feels like a space made for creation and reflection. The canopy bed catches the morning glow, making waking feel deliberate, while a gentle breeze drifts in, carrying the faint scent of the sea. By the window, a desk faces the water, perfect for watching the sunrise or sunset. Just to the left, a private terrace, offers yet another perspective on the shimmering sea, ideal for quiet contemplation or a simple pause to take it all in.

A Space for Artists

Some houses are built for more than just living in. Amber House is one of them, a place that naturally lends itself to thinking, making, and pushing ideas further. It has the right kind of spaces: quiet corners that let you work without distraction, open areas that invite collaboration, and a rhythm that makes focus feel easy.

That is why it feels inevitable that an artist residency will soon take shape here. Painters, writers, designers, photographers, anyone driven by curiosity and the need to create, will find room to experiment, explore new directions, and let projects evolve without the noise of everyday life.

This is not about producing something polished on a deadline. It is about giving ideas time to breathe and seeing what happens when creativity is given space to grow on its own terms. Amber House is the kind of place where that happens naturally.

So, who is Amber House really for? It’s for anyone drawn to that dreamy Greek island life, for those who crave silence that feels real, the kind that lets you simply be rather than rush from one place to another. It’s for people who appreciate beauty and luxury in a deeper, more meaningful way, not through material things, but through a richness of life itself. Here, that feeling is everywhere. Ordinary moments become the highlight of the day: watching the wind move through the garden, listening to birds, noticing how the light shifts across the floor. Everything is done quietly and with intention, which is perhaps why leaving felt harder than expected. The house gives you a rare sense of freedom, the kind holidays sometimes promise but rarely deliver, and it’s a reminder of the life you wish you could live every day.
