Riad Sierra: From California to Marrakech

Marrakech, a city that continues to captivate and enthral, never seems to lose its allure. The Red City is a beguiling destination that draws people from all corners of the globe, from diverse regions, cultures, and religions. Marrakech has become a sanctuary for many, a place where those who may feel lost elsewhere find solace. It's no wonder that it was once home to renowned figures like Yves-Saint Laurent, and even today, it attracts prominent personalities seeking refuge in this unique country. Meeting individuals along the way who have chosen to leave everything behind and make Morocco their new home is not uncommon. While it may initially seem surprising to some, it's truly admirable to see people embracing a simpler and more authentic way of life.

When a new beginning unfolds

Kristen and Shea, a couple originally from Tahoe City, made the bold decision in 2018 to embark on a new adventure in Morocco. After spending their entire lives in a small mountain town, they were ready for a change and eager to explore the unknown. Falling in love with Morocco, they set out to find the perfect place to create their own haven and open their doors to guests from around the world. And they found it.

Nestled in the oldest quarter of the Medina, the couple stumbled upon a truly exquisite riad that they poured their heart and soul into renovating. With unwavering attention to detail and a deep sense of care, they have created a safe place for tourists. The result is a charming guesthouse that exudes an unpretentious beauty, seamlessly blending traditional elements with modern comforts. The open courtyard, a hallmark of traditional riads, serves as a serene oasis where guests can relax and unwind, enveloped by the enchanting ambiance of Marrakech. Every corner of this remarkable riad reflects the couple's meticulous efforts, creating a truly special retreat for those fortunate enough to experience it. Riad Sierra exudes a sense of warmth and familiarity, akin to being at home, where you can feel at ease without any judgment. The friendly owners, always welcoming, provide a comforting presence that can be particularly touching and necessary for travellers embarking on new horizons.

Authentic Moroccan charm and modern comforts

The riad has four uniquely designed guest rooms, each with its own character and charm. The rooms are adorned with traditional Moroccan elements, such as handcrafted tiles, carved woodwork, and vibrant textiles, creating a cozy and inviting atmosphere. Modern comforts, including comfortable beds, air conditioning, and en-suite bathrooms, are seamlessly integrated into the traditional architecture, providing guests with a comfortable and authentic experience.

The 18th-century guesthouse, offers a wealth of amenities for discerning travellers. Among its charms are a refreshing plunge pool, two inviting lounge areas, a cozy library, and a breathtaking sun-drenched terrace, which we consider our personal favourite. From this elevated vantage point, guests can witness the golden hours like never before, with panoramic views of the bustling Medina and the enchanting melodies of the muezzin filling the air.

The courtyard's plunge pool provides a welcome respite from the heat of Marrakech, while the lounge areas offer cozy corners for relaxation and conversation. The well-appointed library, stocked with a diverse collection of books, provides a serene retreat for book lovers. In addition to these indulgences, Riad Sierra also offers a range of services and experiences, including cooking classes, guided tours, and wellness treatments, allowing guests to fully immerse themselves in the local culture and traditions.

Food, sustainability & community

As most riads in the Medina, breakfast is included, serving vegetarian options with local specialties, along with coffee and freshly pressed juice to kick off the day perfectly. And upon request, the most amazing traditional Moroccan vegetarian dish can be served for lunch. A succulent Zaalouk, which consists of an eggplant salad made to absolute perfection, is served as a starter, accompanied by a tasteful vegetarian tagine. While the food options may seem simple, it also reflects their image and signature - simplicity to the core but nicely executed, ensuring that simple is not boring but, in fact, completely captivating.

Riad Sierra's dedication to sustainability and supporting the local community is evident in every aspect. From sourcing locally-produced and organic ingredients for their meals to using traditional craftsmanship in the riad's renovation, Kristen and Shea have created a space that is not only beautiful but also environmentally conscious. They also collaborate with local artisans , promoting the rich cultural heritage of Marrakech and supporting the local economy.

Riad Sierra is more than just a guesthouse; it is a labor of love, a true reflection of Kristen and Shea's unwavering passion for Morocco, its rich culture, and its warm-hearted people. Their admirable commitment to making positive changes at their own pace is evident in every corner of Riad Sierra. As soon as you step inside, you are enveloped by their genuine warmth, creating an experience that we wish every small guesthouse could emulate. While some places are remembered solely for their aesthetically pleasing interiors, Riad Sierra goes beyond that, encompassing beauty, ambiance, and most importantly, an unparalleled sense of comfort. It is a safe haven, a place that we wish more establishments would embody, where guests are truly made to feel at home.
