Gran Hotel Margalida, Mallorca: Chasing the Sun
A new boutique hotel in Banyalbufar built around Mallorca’s most magical element: its light.
Hunting the next new hotel opening has become a real thing, especially when it comes to the luxury hospitality world. There is something special about discovering a place before it officially opens, when everything still feels untouched and you get to experience the first chapter of its story.
While Mallorca is already a stunning island in itself, experiencing it from the newly opened Gran Hotel Margalida felt very special. We have had our fair share of beautiful hotels, but this one felt different. More personal. More intimate. Almost like having your own private escape, with a level of service you would expect from some of the world’s most renowned luxury hotels, but without ever feeling over-present.
The location has a lot to do with it.
Welcome to Banyalbufar
Hidden on the western side of Mallorca, in the village of Banyalbufar, Gran Hotel Margalida sits above the island’s famous ancient stone terraces, overlooking the Mediterranean. This is not the Mallorca of crowded beaches and busy summer streets. Banyalbufar has a completely different energy. It is quieter, more authentic, a village where vineyards hang from the mountainside, roads curve along the cliffs and the sea is always somewhere in the background.
Some places immediately reveal themselves. Others ask you to slow down and discover them. Banyalbufar is definitely the second kind.
And then there is the sun.
The entire hotel feels like it was created around it. Every room faces the sea, every terrace frames the horizon, and every evening brings a different version of the same show. One night the sky turns warm orange, the next it becomes soft pink, and if you are lucky, the sunset ends with a striking red glow over the Mediterranean.
Gran Hotel Margalida wanted to create something grand, but still remind guests that this is a boutique hotel. A place where the scale feels intimate, but the experience feels much bigger.
A Boutique Hotel with a Grand Feeling
The first thing that caught our attention was how naturally the hotel blends into its surroundings. From the outside, it feels almost hidden, as if it has always belonged to the landscape. Inside, the atmosphere changes completely: warm, elegant and full of details that feel connected to Mallorca rather than simply following a trend.
The yellow tones throughout the hotel are probably the best example of this. They are not there just because they look good. They feel like a direct reflection of the island itself — the morning sun, the golden hours before sunset, the warmth that stays on Mallorca long after the day begins to disappear.
The design celebrates light above everything else. Spaces open towards the sea, materials feel natural and every corner seems created to capture the changing mood of the day.
But what really stayed with us was the service. After staying in many luxury hotels, you start noticing when hospitality feels genuine and when it feels rehearsed. Here, everything felt effortless. The team was attentive without interrupting, always there when needed but never taking away from the feeling of being completely on your own.
It is that rare balance between impeccable service and feeling at home.
The Corner Room
We were lucky enough to stay in one of the corner rooms, and it honestly made the experience even more special.
The long balcony wrapping around the room gave us a different perspective throughout the day. In the morning, soft sunlight filtered through the trees and slowly entered the bedroom and bathroom, creating the kind of calm moment where you naturally want to stay a little longer.
The rooms feel more like private Mediterranean residences than traditional hotel rooms. Warm materials, thoughtful details and a connection to the landscape outside make them feel personal rather than just beautifully designed.
But the real highlight is stepping outside.
Having coffee while looking over the sea, feeling the morning breeze, watching the colours change throughout the day, these are the small moments that make a difference.
And then, of course, comes sunset.
We quickly realised that at Gran Hotel Margalida, watching the sky was almost part of the daily routine. Every evening, guests naturally gathered around the terraces, waiting to see what Mallorca had planned for that night.
Dinner, Sunset and Everything Mallorca Does Best
The food deserves a special mention because it is such an important part of the experience.
Led by a chef who understands the value of exceptional ingredients, the restaurant focuses on local products, seasonal flavours and the incredible resources Mallorca has to offer. Fresh seafood, local producers and ingredients connected to the island create a menu that feels sophisticated but never complicated.
Breakfast on the terrace quickly became one of our favourite moments. Sitting outside, looking over the Mediterranean, slowly starting the day with beautiful local products is exactly the kind of simple pleasure that makes a hotel memorable.
But dinner is where the atmosphere truly comes alive.
As the sun starts disappearing behind the horizon, the terrace becomes the perfect place to end the day. The light changes, the pace slows down and suddenly everything feels exactly where it should be. Great food, a beautiful setting and that unforgettable Mallorca sky above you.
