Son Galcerán, Mallorca: A Family-Owned Rural Hotel in Esporles

There are hotels where you arrive with a list of things you want to see around them. And then there are places where, after breakfast, you look at the pool, your terrace and the view and think: maybe we don’t need to go anywhere today.

Son Galcerán was a little bit like that for us.

This family-owned agroturismo sits just outside Esporles, in the foothills of the Tramuntana mountains, inside an 18th-century Mallorcan finca surrounded by orange trees and gardens. The property has been kept small and personal, with the feeling of a traditional Mallorcan home rather than a hotel built to recreate one. There is stone, greenery, old architecture and plenty of space to simply sit outside.

It is peaceful without trying to be a “retreat”, and beautiful without feeling overly polished. We came here with a few places we wanted to visit, but some of our favourite moments ended up being the ones that happened between plans.

Start with breakfast

Breakfast at Son Galcerán is worth making time for.

The buffet is generous, with local products alongside things prepared fresh that morning. Eggs can be ordered exactly how you like them, and there is good coffee to go with it.

It is easy to sit down thinking breakfast will be quick and then realise you have been there for another coffee. The kind of morning where there is no need to rush through the first meal of the day.

The coffee shop

One of the nicest little surprises at Son Galcerán is its coffee shop.

It is a small, bright space with windows all around and views onto the greenery outside. It feels removed enough from the rest of the hotel to be a destination in itself, but still very much connected to the gardens and the landscape.

It is also worth knowing about if you are travelling while working. With the natural light, good coffee and peaceful setting, it is the sort of space where answering emails for an hour or opening your laptop for a little while would actually be enjoyable.

And then there is the pool, just outside.

Cappuccino, oat milk, by the pool

A small detail quickly became part of the afternoon routine: ordering a cappuccino with oat milk from the coffee shop and having it brought directly to the pool.

The pool looks out over the lush landscape surrounding the property, with the Tramuntana mountains beyond it. It is a good place for a long afternoon, swimming, reading, talking, or simply staying on the lounger until the heat starts to soften.

There is no complicated pool scene here. Just the greenery, the mountains and the occasional coffee arriving at exactly the right time.

Esporles and the mountains

When it is time to leave the property, Esporles is just outside.

The village is small and easy to explore on foot, with cafés, restaurants and the everyday rhythm of a Mallorcan town. It is also a good base for getting into the Tramuntana, whether that means hiking, cycling, driving through the mountains or exploring some of the surrounding villages.

The location works particularly well for anyone who wants a mix of exploring and staying put. A morning out can easily turn into an afternoon back at the hotel, without spending half the day getting from one place to another.

Aperitivo on the terrace

At the end of the day, the terrace is where you want to be.

Take a drink outside and look over the lush landscape, with the mountains sitting in the distance. As the afternoon gets cooler, the light changes across the valley and the whole view becomes even better.

There is no need to make it more complicated than that. An aperitivo, a good view and somewhere comfortable to sit is enough.

It is also a lovely moment to actually take in the setting of Son Galcerán, the orange trees, the gardens, the old finca and the mountains surrounding it.

Maybe we didn’t need to go anywhere

That thought from the first morning ended up being quite accurate.

Of course, Mallorca is an island made for getting in the car and seeing where the road takes you. Esporles, the Tramuntana, the coast, Palma, there is always somewhere else to go.

But there was something particularly nice about having a place that didn’t make you feel guilty for staying put.

A few hours could disappear without much happening at all. A coffee could turn into a swim, an afternoon could stretch into aperitivo, and suddenly it was evening. Nothing needed to be organised or justified.

Maybe that is what made Son Galcerán feel so easy to settle into. It doesn’t ask you to experience Mallorca in any particular way. You can spend the day exploring the island, or you can spend most of it within the same few hundred metres.

For a few days, the latter sounded pretty good to us.
